Czechoslovakia's Rychly storms ahead and takes the lead from Monaco as Britain comes back strong into a solid third place. Then shockingly, Germany cuts left to enter La Trappe and is stunned to see the goats run directly in front of his car. He slams on his brakes, but still plows into the herd at incredible speed. Somehow, only one goat is struck, but now, disoriented, Hegkman misjudges the La Trappe curve and loses control in a cloud of tire smoke and brakes. Despite every effort, he spins out, by sheer driving skill saving his white Bugatti T51 from wrecking into the hay bales off the track. Watching the events unfold, Sebi Orsi wisely cuts to the inside of La Trappe. His Maserati speeds up to position himself to pass Germany and soon move next into fourth place. The panicked goats run off of the track completely, heading to the safety of the nearby hill. Farther back, on the straight, Finland hammers past Sweden and joins Spain and Switzerland as they race toward the curve in high gear, while behind, Norway and Belgium bring up the rear, steadily accelerating into what may turn out to be a race against Germany to see who can stay out of last place.
